Dear Parents and Guardians:
This letter is a follow up to our communication on Friday regarding a situation that had occurred at our school. I want to again make sure that you have the facts and dispel any rumors you may have heard. Please be assured that the safety and well being of your child is always foremost in everything we do.
Students began spreading a false rumor about a weapon possibly being brought to school. That information was relayed to metro police before it was relayed to the school. When we were notified, our school resource office, security and the administration responded immediately. The student in question had left school and was off school grounds. K-9 units searched inside the school and outside and no weapons were found. The student was also detained and after a full investigation, we were unable to substantiate any allegations.
We are all concerned about school safety; however, it is critical that your child understands the importance of conveying any rumors or tips to school staff members rather than to other students, and that they understand the importance of dealing with facts rather than gossip. This will enable us to take appropriate action and to avoid widespread unfounded rumors and major disruption to the instructional day as occurred on Friday.
Thank you to all of you who have called or written to express your support of our handling of this situation. I also want to commend our outstanding staff and students for their immediate and professional response. Our emergency plan was in place and everyone cooperated. If you have any further questions about this situation, please do not hesitate to call us at 485-8251. Again, thank you for your support of Fern Creek High School.
Sincerely,
Houston Barber, Ph. D
